Google Paid $2.7 Billion For This Guy. He Just Left. Again.

Noam Shazeer, co-author of the paper that invented modern AI, has joined OpenAI. Google must be furious.

The man who co-wrote the paper that made modern AI possible has left Google for OpenAI.

His name is Noam Shazeer. In 2017, he was one of the eight authors of "Attention Is All You Need," the research paper that introduced the Transformer architecture. Every major AI model you have ever used. GPT. Gemini. Claude. All of them sit on that foundation.

Two years ago, Google paid $2.7 billion to bring him back from Character.AI, the chatbot company he co-founded after leaving Google in 2021. $2.7 billion. To recruit back someone who had already left once.

He has now announced he is leaving for OpenAI.

Let that sink in. Google paid $2.7 billion. He stayed for two years. Then walked out the door to join their biggest competitor.

There is no flattering interpretation of this for Google. Either Shazeer does not believe Google is going to win the AI race, or OpenAI made him an offer Google chose not to match, or both. My money is on both.

Shazeer is not just any researcher. He is the kind of person whose instincts about which problems to work on next matter enormously. The fact that he has chosen to bet on OpenAI, after watching Google from the inside for two years, is a signal worth taking seriously.

Google will survive. They have DeepMind, Gemini, enormous compute resources, and more money than most nations. But they are losing the talent perception war, and in AI, talent perception is its own kind of power.

OpenAI now has the co-author of the paper that started this entire industry on their payroll. That is not nothing. That is, in fact, quite a lot.
